Hope springs eternal. As does music. Are they not, fundamentally the same thing? Neither could I live without. “So, in a world of snow, of things that come and go, where what you think you know you can’t be certain ofyou must believe in spring and love“.
Here’s some of what is on our calendar this spring:
3/26 KALA Ukulele Day in LA at USPACE with Jim D’Ville. I will be using my new book “Color-Along Ukulele” for my all ages class, and you get a copy to keep with class admission! Win a Kala Waterman uke– Giving away one per class!¡!
5/5-8 WEST COAST UKULELE RETREAT in Asilomar. If you have never been… GO! (if there are still rooms available) This is a FANTASTIC retreat with great instructors in the most beautiful, peaceful place you can imagine. And the food’s great, too!
We are heading across the pond to England in June, where Daniel will be playing the Ukulele Festival of Great Britain. To prepare, he is scheduling private house concerts and a public show at U-Space on May 21. More details to follow as they solidify. This will be a great show with a guest bass player and El Uke will be debuting some very snazzy new material as well as playing selections from his CD EL UKULELE. Give it a preview!
He was born a Jew in Germany under Hitler. His mother saved his life by giving him to an orphanage who sent him to France in an exchange for Christian orphans. After France fell, he was spirited to America and grew up in the Bronx.
What happens next? He begins to make choices.
How do we become who we are? One way to understand our own fate is to examine the extraordinary lives of others.
This Saturday, September 5 at noon and 2 pm the Sukey Jump Band will be at the Skirball Center singing songs that Bill Graham knew, from Roszhinkes Mit Mandlen to the Sidewalks of New York to Oye, Como Va: Yiddish lullabies, R&B, Rock and Roll and everything in between.
Sing along, play along (we will have some Kazoos for sale so you can join the horn section) dance to groove.
Think about the life of this extraordinary person, and about your own fate- and how you are shaping it right now.
Squeeze out the last bits of summer fun before it is officially autumn. The kids are back in school, and the warm weather hasn’t gotten the memo yet, so grab your uke and your dancing shoes and meet us in Ventura or at the Skirball Center for some music and fun.
This Saturday afternoon we are teaching and playing uke at the Foster Library in Ventura, CA. Daniel will take the intermediate and advanced players and I will teach the beginners and kids. Jamming starts at 1, followed by classes and then Daniel and I will do a little show (maybe our students will join us?) Daniel has some great new songs to unveil for you!
Saturday September 5th at noon and 2pm we are rocking out at the Skirball Center, doing a set inspired by Bill Graham. Everything from Russian lullabies, French kid’s songs to Mustang Sally! We will tell a little musical tale of Bill’s journey from his escape from Nazi Germany to producing large scale rock concerts, and get you on your feet dancing!
The next weekend The Smoking Jackets takes off for the Wine Country Ukulele Festival… More to tell you about that soon, but you may be able to bag earlybird tickets if you jump on it today!
